Did You Know Sorrel [Roselle Hibiscus] is A Year-Round Super Drink Packed With Health Benefits?
Discover how this vibrant drink can boost your health all year long.
Growing up on the island of Dominica, sorrel was always synonymous with Christmas.
Sorrel was planted to be harvested just in time for the holiday season.
No Christmas was complete without a glass of sorrel drink and a slice of fruit cake.
Visiting friends and neighbors to sample their versions of sorrel drinks and holiday treats was a tradition.
Each household had its recipe variation, but I always preferred mine to be strong, filled with ginger, and completely sugar-free.
But did you know that sorrel isn't just for Christmas?
Beyond being a festive favorite, it’s a nutritional powerhouse that can be enjoyed year-round to enhance your health.
What is Sorrel?
In Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean, we call this beautiful plant sorrel, but it’s also known as roselle, Florida cranberry, Jamaica flower, or hibiscus flower in different parts of the world.
Its botanical name is Hibiscus sabdariffa, a native plant of Central West Africa that thrives in warm, sunny climates.
The part of the plant that’s used for making the drink is the calyx—the fleshy, vibrant red covering that surrounds the seed.
While sorrel is most commonly used as a beverage in the Caribbean, it’s used worldwide in teas, jams, sauces, and even as a substitute for cranberry sauce.
Health Benefits of Sorrel

With all these benefits, it’s clear that sorrel isn’t just a festive drink—it’s a natural way to boost your health all year round.
How to Grow Sorrel
Every year, I grow sorrel. Sometimes, I start from seeds and other times; I buy seedlings from local garden centers. Although I grow sorrel in containers, I’ve found that they thrive best when planted directly in the ground.
However, if you don’t have access to fresh sorrel, the dried flowers are easily available in Caribbean and Spanish stores, meaning you can enjoy this health-boosting drink anytime!
How to Make Sorrel Drink
Ingredients:
1/4 lb dried sorrel
2 bay leaves
3 whole cloves
1 small cinnamon stick
Sugar (or preferred sweetener) to taste
Crushed ginger
Instructions:
Boil enough water to cover the sorrel in a large saucepan.
Add the dried sorrel, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon stick, and crushed ginger.
Cover and boil for about one minute, then remove from heat.
Let the mixture cool and steep overnight for maximum flavor.
Strain and sweeten the mixture with your favorite sweetener (honey, agave, etc.).
Pour into bottles, adding a clove to each for extra flavor.
Allow the drink to stand for about four days, or refrigerate it.
Serve chilled over ice, and enjoy!
